How do I stop graffiti on my property?

Everyone agrees that rapid response is key when it comes to graffiti abatement. When you find graffiti on your property, clean it up the next day, if possible. No one likes to take a risk putting up a huge and complex piece of graffiti if they know it's going to get blanked the next morning before anyone has a chance to see it.

For fencing and walls, use paint. Use multiple coats if necessary to obliterate the markings. Don't just spot-paint--do a whole section. Admittedly, paint is expensive, so if you're in a particularly troubled neighborhood, I recommend picking up relatively close-matched reject colors for cheap from your local hardware store. Don't be afraid to make your red fence brown.

For unpainted concrete that can handle paint thinner, use paint thinner. A wire brush might help. Paint thinner is nasty stuff, so wear appropriate physical protection.

How do I download the images?

Mouse-over the image until it's highlighted, then click it. Below the image will appear the download buttons.

You only give out the PNG and SVG images colored black. How can I get them in different colors?

With the PNG, use your favorite image editor, and try first inverting the image (so it's white), and then look for something like "Colorify" in one of your pulldown menus.

Alternately with the PNG, use your favorite image editor, and go to the "Levels" tool. Adjust the output on a per-channel basis to get the color you want.

With the SVG, just set the "fill" color for the path.

Are there gang tags in the archive? If I use them in my game, etc., might there be some unforeseen negative consequences?

I don't know what half these tags say, let alone what they mean. I don't filter them. Use them at your own risk. See the Terms of Use, below, for details of my indemnification.

Why don't you have any brilliant pieces done by some of the famous graffiti artists?

In order to avoid copyright claims, I purposefully limit the graffiti on the site to tags and minor, illegal, anonymous graffiti.

Do you have any profane or dirty tags on this site?

Yes, but they're hidden from innocent eyes.

Hint: &mode=lewd

Did you make or paint any of the original graffiti that appears on the site?

No. My handwriting is terrible, and painting skills marginal.

Did you accept submissions?

Yes! Especially foreign ones!

Take a photo, preferably one with no obstructions or shadows as face-on as possible, and you'll make my life easier.

And then mail it to me.

Are you pro- or anti-graffiti?

Definitely sometimes. This is a very complex question that requires a complex response, which I'll not be writing now.

If someone puts graffiti on my fence, I'll mercilessly paint it out the next day (I've done it before) and it will not be featured on this site.

That being said, I just adore a lot of the pieces I grab for this site. People can be very creative.

What tools and fonts are used to make this site?
Inkscape, GIMP, PHP, MySQL, jQuery, HTML, JavaScript, CSS3, Python, PyPNG, Pngcrush, Ritzy's Tagster font, cron, bash, Arch Linux.
What's the license to use these files?

I disclaim all ownership of the graffiti images and SVG files on this site. As far as I'm concerned, people are free to use and distribute them, commercially or non-commercially, without attribution. I won't come after you demanding anything.

But technically, they're all derivative works of the original graffiti artists, and the copyright belongs to them, not me. If any graffiti artist is unhappy with my free redistribution of their work, they are more than welcome to report me to the police. ;-) Alternately, they might mail me their particulars at beej@beej.us, and I will remove the offending work from my site.
